Plate heat exchanger applications
A plate heat exchanger transfers heat between separate fluid streams. Selecting one for an industrial or food process starts with the actual duty, fluid behaviour, materials and cleaning requirements.
Match the exchanger to the process
PHE-INDIA’s two product families are Industrial PHE and Food Grade PHE. The application examples below come from the existing product scope. They do not establish that one model is suitable for every service.
For the heat-transfer mechanism, see the working principle and diagram. For engineering inputs, use the selection checklist.
Industrial cooling and utility duties
| Application | Inputs that affect selection | Product route |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic and lubrication oil cooling | Oil grade, viscosity across the operating range, temperatures, flow and pressure drop. | Industrial PHE |
| Furnace DM water and closed-loop cooling | Water quality, inlet temperatures, required outlet temperature, flow and pressure limits. | Industrial PHE |
| Quench oil and process cooling | Fluid properties, contamination, fouling behaviour and cleaning method. | Industrial PHE |
| Chilled-water and HVAC circuits | Both circuit flow rates, temperature approach, pressure separation and water quality. | Industrial PHE |
| Chemical or anodizing duties | Exact chemical identity, concentration, temperature and compatibility of all wetted materials. | Industrial PHE; duty-specific review |
| Wastewater and heat recovery | Solids, fibres, deposits, fluid compatibility and access for cleaning. | Industrial PHE; suitability review |
| Solar hot water and plant utilities | Normal/maximum temperatures, variable flow, water quality and operating limits. | Industrial PHE |
A plate passage can be unsuitable for some solids or heavily fouling fluids. Compare other exchanger constructions if passage size, cleaning or the operating envelope does not fit the duty.
Food, beverage and pharmaceutical utilities
| Application | Selection considerations |
|---|---|
| Milk chilling and pasteurizer plate packs | Product temperatures, stages, flow and cleaning programme; the complete process determines pasteurization performance. |
| Beverage, beer and wine heating/cooling | Product composition, gas content where relevant, temperatures, fouling and hygienic connection needs. |
| Sugar syrup and ice cream mix | Viscosity, concentration, particles and cleanability affect the required channel and thermal design. |
| CIP solution heating | Cleaning chemical, concentration, temperatures and material/seal compatibility. |
| Pharmaceutical hot water generation | Water quality and utility requirements; this application description does not establish pharmaceutical system validation. |
Review the Food Grade PHE specification inputs. Product-contact materials and cleaning validation must be checked for the process.
Boiler-connected heating and steam-water duties
A heat exchanger may separate a boiler-water circuit from a secondary circuit where the selected construction and conditions permit it. A steam-water duty needs specific review of steam conditions, condensate handling, controls and pressure/temperature limits.
Identify whether the heating medium is hot water or steam; do not use the terms interchangeably. Supply the temperature programme, flow, available utility conditions and control requirements. A general liquid-to-liquid selection does not establish suitability for condensing steam.
Evaporators, condensers and marine fresh water systems
Evaporation and condensation involve phase change. Fluid identity, pressure, distribution and the plate joining/sealing arrangement require a dedicated selection. The terms “plate evaporator” and “plate condenser” describe duties that cannot be assigned to any gasketed unit based on appearance.
A marine plate type fresh water generator is a complete system with requirements beyond a general heat exchanger. It is not listed as a PHE-INDIA product here. For comparison of plate constructions, consult the types guide; confirm the actual equipment scope before an enquiry.
Application questions
Can one PHE be reused for a different fluid?
Only after reviewing material and gasket compatibility, heat duty, pressure drop, operating limits and cleaning. Similar temperatures alone do not establish suitability.
Which details are most useful for an application review?
Provide both fluids and concentrations, flow rates, inlet/outlet temperatures, pressures and allowable pressure drop, plus solids, viscosity and cleaning conditions where relevant.
Does a listed industry mean every duty is covered?
No. Each application is selected against its actual process conditions. Unusual fluids, phase change or contamination-control requirements need specific engineering review.
Send an application-specific enquiry
Describe the process, available measurements and the problem to be solved. For an existing unit include its nameplate, photographs and changes in temperature or pressure drop. Review cost and quotation factors if you are comparing offers.
