Plate heat exchanger maintenance, cleaning and troubleshooting

Useful PHE maintenance starts with the operating history, the actual fluids and the instructions supplied with the unit. This guide helps plant teams collect evidence, plan service and understand cleaning choices; it does not replace a model-specific maintenance procedure.

Build a useful operating baseline

Record temperatures and pressures at the relevant inlets and outlets on both sides, along with flow rates, fluid composition and operating state. Keep the readings taken when the exchanger is clean and performing its agreed duty.

A change in outlet temperature alone does not identify the cause. Supply temperatures, flow, viscosity, valve settings, air, fouling and measurement errors can all affect the comparison. Record changes to the process before deciding that the plate pack needs cleaning.

For the thermal basis, see how heat crosses the plates and the heat-duty and pressure-drop inputs.

Plan inspection and service access

Keep the unit drawing, plate arrangement, assembled plate-pack dimension and previous service records available. Confirm space for opening the frame, handling plates and removing parts without damaging adjacent equipment.

Before opening or disturbing a unit, trained personnel must isolate it, cool and depressurise both circuits, drain it appropriately and follow the plant's permit and equipment procedures. Do not tighten a hot or pressurised plate pack to address a leak.

Choose inspection intervals using duty, fouling history, seal condition and manufacturer guidance. There is no universal cleaning or gasket-replacement interval for every fluid and process.

Choose a cleaning approach for the deposit

Cleaning decisions to discuss with the equipment supplier
ApproachWhat it can help withWhat must be checked
Cleaning in place (CIP)Circulating an approved cleaning solution without opening a suitable unit.Deposit identity, flow path, chemical/material compatibility and the approved temperature, concentration and exposure time.
Opening and manual cleaningAccess to plate surfaces and seals in an openable gasketed frame.Isolation, plate order, approved tools and handling methods; avoid plate/groove damage.
Inspection before decidingSeparating operating changes from deposits, blockage or component problems.Comparable temperatures, flow and pressure readings; external circuit checks.

A cleaning chemical that removes a deposit may also attack the plate or gasket. Do not select concentration, cleaning temperature or circulation time from a generic web example. The procedure must account for the actual deposit, material grade, seal compound and process requirements.

Preserve the plate sequence and orientation when a frame is opened. Use the approved procedure for cleaning, rinsing and reassembly. Food-process cleaning also requires the plant's hygiene and process validation controls.

Troubleshooting observations

Record symptoms before assigning a cause
ObservationPossible areas to investigateUseful evidence
Higher pressure dropChanged flow/viscosity, blocked passages, fouling or external circuit restrictions.Inlet/outlet pressure and flow on both sides, fluid temperature and clean baseline.
Reduced heating or coolingChanged inlet conditions, inadequate flow, air, fouling, incorrect operating arrangement or instrument error. All four temperatures, flow readings, process changes and connection drawing.
External leakageSeal condition, compatibility, displaced gasket, plate/groove condition or assembly issues.Leak location, service history, photographs and operating conditions; isolate safely.
Suspected mixing or contaminationPossible loss of separation, including a damaged plate or other system fault.Stop and isolate under plant procedures; arrange qualified investigation and testing.
Repeated problems after cleaningUnresolved process cause, incompatible procedure, incorrect reassembly or persistent deposits.Cleaning record, material/chemical details, plate arrangement and changes in performance.

The table lists possibilities, not a remote diagnosis. A low outlet temperature, visible leak or pressure reading does not by itself prove a particular failed component.

Plates, gaskets and reassembly

Identify the exchanger model, plate pattern and gasket compound before ordering replacements. Similar-looking seals or plates are not proof of fit or chemical compatibility. Provide photographs and nameplate details when requesting parts.

Follow the approved plate order, fastening method and assembled dimension. Do not substitute generic gasket maker or sealant, modify grooves or use an assumed bolt torque. See the gasket and replacement-plate guide for identification inputs.

Return-to-service and pressure-testing requirements

Inspection, any required pressure/leak testing and return-to-service checks must follow the applicable equipment and plant procedure. Test pressure, duration, medium and acceptance criteria depend on the design and service; this guide does not prescribe universal values.

Record parts replaced, cleaning performed, findings and the responsible service team. Compare the restored operating readings with the agreed baseline after start-up under the supplied instructions. Escalate unresolved leaks or contamination concerns before returning the unit to normal production.

Maintenance questions

How often should a plate heat exchanger be cleaned?

Use actual fouling/performance trends, the process hygiene requirements and the equipment instructions. A fixed interval copied from another application may not suit your plant.

Can a pressure-drop increase prove that plates are fouled?

No. First compare flow, fluid temperature/viscosity and circuit conditions with the baseline. Fouling is one possibility among several.

Can I use any acid cleaner?

No. Chemical identity, concentration, temperature and contact time must suit the deposit, plate material and gasket compound under an approved procedure.

Can I replace a gasket without checking the model?

Confirm model, plate pattern, attachment and compound before replacement. A visual shape match alone is insufficient.
