Plate heat exchanger gaskets and replacement

Gaskets seal a gasketed plate heat exchanger and direct the two streams into the correct channels. PHE-INDIA provides replacement plates, gaskets and service support. Correct identification matters: a similar outline does not prove that a replacement fits or suits the fluid.

Identify the gasket before requesting spares

Send the exchanger manufacturer, model, serial or nameplate details, plate pattern, existing gasket identification and clear photographs. Include the number required, both fluids, concentrations, operating temperatures and the cleaning programme. Record any existing leakage or performance problem.

Compatibility with equipment from another manufacturer must be checked for the specific model. No authorised dealership or universal cross-brand compatibility is claimed here. Ask the team to identify your replacement requirement.

Gasket material and attachment

Rubber gasket selection depends on chemical exposure, temperature, compression and the cleaning cycle. NBR and EPDM are examples encountered in plate heat exchanger service, but their names alone do not define a compound’s usable limits or suitability. Use the exact grade approved for the unit; this page is not a PHE-INDIA stock list.

Gaskets may use a mechanical attachment or an approved adhesive system. A generic gasket maker or sealant is not a substitute for the specified PHE seal. Do not alter grooves, glue selection or curing instructions without the equipment supplier’s procedure.

Inspection, fouling and leakage

During planned servicing, inspect for displaced, hardened, swollen or damaged seals and check the plate surfaces and grooves. Fouling and a gasket fault are different problems, although both can affect operation. Compare temperatures, flow and pressure drop with the clean baseline before deciding what work is needed.

If cross-contamination or a leak is suspected, stop and isolate the unit under the plant’s approved procedure. Do not tighten a hot or pressurised exchanger to try to stop a leak.

Replacement planning

Have trained personnel isolate, cool, drain and depressurise both circuits before opening. Preserve the plate order and orientation, follow the supplied cleaning and gasket instructions, and reassemble to the specified plate-pack dimension. Bolt torque or a generic online dimension is not a substitute for the unit documentation.

Common replacement questions

Can any gasket with the same shape be used?

No. Plate geometry, thickness, attachment and compound must all match the approved specification.

How often should gaskets be replaced?

There is no universal interval. Operating conditions, cleaning exposure and inspection history determine the maintenance plan.

Can sealant repair a damaged plate?

Do not use sealant as a plate repair. Ask the service team to assess the fault and the required replacement parts.
