Plate heat exchanger vs shell and tube
The right exchanger is the one that meets the process duty within its mechanical, material and maintenance limits. Neither construction is universally better. Compare an actual rated selection, not only a general efficiency claim.
How the constructions differ
A gasketed plate unit routes fluids through alternating channels formed by a compressed plate pack. A shell and tube exchanger puts one stream inside tubes and the other around them in a shell. Both transfer heat through a metal wall while keeping streams separate in normal operation.
Plate construction can provide a compact heat-transfer surface. Shell and tube construction offers different tube, shell and removable-bundle arrangements. Maintenance access and allowable conditions depend on the particular design.

When a plate exchanger is worth assessing
Consider a gasketed plate unit for liquid heating and cooling duties where compatible materials, channel dimensions and operating limits can be established. Very viscous fluids, large particles, severe fouling or conditions outside the gasket envelope require careful review. Do not assume an ordinary gasketed unit can handle a duty because another plate construction can.
Compare total scope, not a headline price
Ask for rated heat duty, both outlet temperatures, pressure loss, selected materials, design conditions and the cleaning plan. Include pumping, access, service parts and downtime in the commercial comparison. An underspecified quote can appear less expensive while excluding essential requirements.
